Booking your rental home up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Many management companies supply Isle of Palms area travel guide magazines that include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. Know before you go:
- Take a copy of the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property.
- To ensure that damages are not linked to your visit, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. Call the host immediately to record your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be valuable.

- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on great feedback to compel more reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
